ALINIA (Nitazoxanide)

This chapter provides the basic characteristics, side effects/toxicity, drug interactions, and dosage information of the ALINIA (Nitazoxanide). Nitazoxanide for oral suspension (patients 1 year of age and older) and tablets (patients 12 years and older) are indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. Nitazoxanide is used for: Entamoeba histolytica, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Encephalitozoon intestinalis, Isospora belli, Blastocysts hominis, Balantidium coli, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichura, Taenia saginata, Hymenolepis nana, and Fasciola hepatica. Food will increase the absorption of nitazoxanide. Nitazoxanide has not been shown to be superior to placebo for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum in HIV‐infected or immunodeficient patients. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are side effects of Nitazoxanide.
