The invention is based on a data device for a motor vehicle. Data devices for a motor vehicle are already know that are designed for telematic services. Besides a telephone, such data devices have a database, a satellite receiver, and a display. A data device () for a motor vehicle is proposed which has a database (), a GPS receiver (), and a display (). In the database (), place data sets with at least the place name and geographical data are stored in memory. The current position of the motor vehicle can be determined by the GPS receiver. A place data set is selected whose name is shown on the display (). From the current position of the motor vehicle and the geographical data of the data set selected, further data are generated and shown on the display ().
