Results The 1‐year prevalence of hand eczema was 5·2% (n = 152) and 4·0% (n = 116) (P &lt; 0·03), and lifetime prevalence was 9·7% (n = 284) and 7·0% (n = 206) (P &lt; 0·01), respectively, when adolescents and parents reported. The incidence rate was 573/100 000 person‐years according to the adolescent report. The level of agreement between adolescents and parents was fair for 1‐year and lifetime prevalence (κ = 0·56 and κ = 0·49, respectively). According to the Hand Eczema Extent Score, 27·0% (n = 36) had moderate‐to‐severe hand eczema. Conclusions At the age of 16 years, the 1‐year prevalence of hand eczema was substantial, with an incidence rate of the same magnitude as in adults. Female predominance was seen in adolescence. It is preferable that the occurrence of hand eczema is reported by adolescents themselves, as they are the ones most aware of their symptoms. What's already known about this topic? The occurrence and extent of hand eczema in adults is well known. The prevalence of hand eczema in adolescents has been reported in a few studies, but the incidence rate and age at onset has not previously been studied. It is not known which are the more reliable reporters of the occurrence of hand eczema in adolescents, parents or adolescents. What does this study add? Incidence rate of hand eczema in adolescents is of the same magnitude as in adults; 1‐year period prevalence is somewhat lower. The extent of hand eczema is comparable to findings in adults. The onset of hand eczema is evenly distributed during childhood. Female predominance seems to start in adolescence. Self‐reports of hand eczema by 16 year olds are suggested to be preferable.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0007-0963</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1365-2133</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/bjd.13194</identifier><identifier>PMID: 24938459</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>England: Blackwell Publishing Ltd</publisher><subject>Adolescence ; Adolescent ; Adolescents ; Age composition ; Age Distribution ; Age of Onset ; Child development ; Eczema ; Eczema - epidemiology ; Epidemiologic Methods ; Female ; Hand Dermatoses - epidemiology ; Humans ; Male ; Sex Distribution ; Sweden - epidemiology ; Teenagers</subject><ispartof>British journal of dermatology (1951), 2014-09, Vol.171 (3), p.609-614</ispartof><rights>2014 British Association of Dermatologists</rights><rights>2014 British Association of Dermatologists.</rights><rights>Copyright © 2014 British Association of Dermatologists</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4994-b7f589899d081ae4fe26c28253dee3138d1b04edb1ea14b83315dd584ccbb5573</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4994-b7f589899d081ae4fe26c28253dee3138d1b04edb1ea14b83315dd584ccbb5573</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2Fbjd.13194$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2Fbjd.13194$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>230,314,776,780,881,1411,27901,27902,45550,45551</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24938459$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink><backlink>$$Uhttp://kipublications.ki.se/Default.aspx?queryparsed=id:129949590$$DView record from Swedish Publication Index$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Grönhagen, C.M.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lidén, C.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Bergström, A.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kull, I.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wahlgren, C.-F.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Meding, B.</creatorcontrib><title>Prevalence and incidence of hand eczema in adolescence: report from BAMSE - a population-based birth cohort</title><title>British journal of dermatology (1951)</title><addtitle>Br J Dermatol</addtitle><description>Summary Background BAMSE is a Swedish population‐based birth cohort.
