Aerogels from nanofibrillated cellulose with tunable oleophobicity

The formation of structured porous aerogels of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) by freeze-drying has been demonstrated. The aerogels have a high porosity, as shown by FE-SEM and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements, and a very low density ( 90°) for castor oil ( γ lv = 35.8 mN m −1 ) and hexad...

Zusammenfassung:The formation of structured porous aerogels of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) by freeze-drying has been demonstrated. The aerogels have a high porosity, as shown by FE-SEM and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements, and a very low density ( 90°) for castor oil ( γ lv = 35.8 mN m −1 ) and hexadecane ( γ lv = 27.5 mN m −1 ). The formation of structured nanofibrillated cellulose aerogels with tunable oleophobicity has been demonstrated. The SEM-image shows the structure for an aerogel frozen at a concentration of 0.7 wt% and the corresponding wetting of the oleophobic aerogel with castor oil.
