In this paper, we describe a model for managing the work of a design team within a VLSI design environment. The model is based on a task specification language, for encapsulating CAD tool invocations and arranging the sequencing of such invocations to accomplish specific tasks, and an novel activity model, which maintains the history of task invocations and serves as a focus for sharing work results in a cooperative manner. The translator of the task specification language and a prototype task manager have been implemented within the OCT CAD framework.
