description Escherichia coli is one pathogenic bacterium which may cause digestive infection and diarrhea. One plant derived active compound which may potentially be antibacterial is the leaf extract of bachang (Mangifera foetida L.). This research aims at examining the potential of bachang leaf methanol extract on E. coli, determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), formulating methanolic leaf extract of bachang as handsanitizer gel and characterization. MIC is determined using well diffusion method. The characterization of handsanitizer gel includes pH test, dispersive power test, consistency, homogeneity, organoleptic test and activity test. MIC of methanolic leaf extract of bachang is applied to E. coli at concentration of 1 ppm with zone of inhibition of 1.31mm. The Handsanitizer is made of extract at concentration of 1, 5 and 10 ppm. pH test is conducted at pH of 5.1-6.0. The dispersive power test characterization generally results in dispersion of 5.12-6.89 cm, meeting SNI requirements. The handsanitizer has consistency in its homogenous gel form. Handsanitizer at extract concentration of 1, 5 and 10 ppm may inhibit the growth of E. coli with antibacterial activity of 11.75; 13.37; and 13.95 mm.
