Dementia was diagnosed in 82 patients (13.1%). The mortality rate was 62.2% (51/82) among patients affected by dementia compared to 26.2% (143/545) in subjects without dementia (p<0.001, Chi-Squared test). In a logistic regression model age, and the diagnosis of dementia resulted independently associated with a higher mortality, and patients diagnosed with dementia presented an OR of 1.84 (95% CI: 1.09-3.13, p<0.05). Among patients diagnosed with dementia the most frequent symptoms of onset were delirium, especially in the hypoactive form, and worsening of the functional status.
The diagnosis of dementia, especially in the most advanced stages, represents an important risk factor for mortality in COVID-19 patients. The clinical presentation of COVID-19 in subjects with dementia is atypical, reducing early recognition of symptoms and hospitalization.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1279-7707</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1760-4788</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1007/s12603-020-1389-1</identifier><identifier>PMID: 32510106</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>France: Springer Paris</publisher><subject>Aged ; Aged, 80 and over ; Betacoronavirus ; Coronavirus Infections - complications ; COVID-19 ; Dementia - complications ; Dementia - epidemiology ; Female ; Humans ; Italy - epidemiology ; Logistic Models ; Male ; Middle Aged ; Pandemics ; Pneumonia, Viral - complications ; Prevalence ; Retrospective Studies ; Risk Factors ; SARS-CoV-2</subject><ispartof>The Journal of nutrition, health & aging, 2020-01, Vol.24 (6), p.560-562</ispartof><rights>Serdi and Springer-Verlag International SAS, part of Springer Nature 2020</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>230,314,777,781,882,27905,27906</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32510106$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Bianchetti, A</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Rozzini, R</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Guerini, F</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Boffelli, S</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Ranieri, P</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Minelli, G</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Bianchetti, L</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Trabucchi, M</creatorcontrib><title>Clinical Presentation of COVID19 in Dementia Patients</title><title>The Journal of nutrition, health & aging</title><addtitle>J Nutr Health Aging</addtitle><description>No studies analyzing the role of dementia as a risk factor for mortality in patients affected by COVID-19.
