It included various sections in order to assess respiratory complaints, QOL (World Health Organization QOL (WHOQOL)-BREF), and the cognitive and depression status. The outcome variables were the presence of a score lower than 50 (&lt;50) in each of the WHOQOL-BREF domains (physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environmental health). Chronic bronchitis, frequent cough, current wheezing, asthma, and allergic rhinitis were considered as potential risk factors. The surveyed sample was (n = 887) 79% female, with a mean age of 84 years (SD: 7 years). In the multivariable analysis, a score of &lt;50 in the physical domain was associated with wheezing in the previous 12 months (odds ratio (OR): 2.03, confidence interval (CI): 1.25–3.31) and asthma (OR: 1.95, CI: 1.12–3.38). The psychological domain was related with a frequent cough (OR: 1.43, CI: 0.95–2.91). A score of &lt;50 in the environmental domain was associated with chronic bronchitis (OR: 2.89, CI: 1.34–6.23) and emphysema (OR: 3.89, CI: 1.27–11.88). In view of these findings, the presence of respiratory diseases seems to be an important risk factor for a low QOL among elderly nursing home residents.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1479-9723</identifier><identifier>ISSN: 1479-9731</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1479-9731</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1177/1479972316636990</identifier><identifier>PMID: 26965222</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>London, England: SAGE Publications</publisher><subject>Aged ; Aged, 80 and over ; Asthma ; Bronchitis ; Chronic Disease ; Female ; Humans ; Incidence ; Male ; Middle Aged ; Nursing Homes ; Original Papers ; Portugal - epidemiology ; Prevalence ; Quality of Life ; Respiratory diseases ; Respiratory Tract Diseases - epidemiology ; Respiratory Tract Diseases - psychology ; Surveys and Questionnaires</subject><ispartof>Chronic respiratory disease, 2016-08, Vol.13 (3), p.211-219</ispartof><rights>The Author(s) 2016</rights><rights>The Author(s) 2016.</rights><rights>The Author(s) 2016 2016 SAGE Publications</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c559t-55b041e56fae76e2562b677c6f6741198a6da5d40542189f00bed3c64b0698d93</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c559t-55b041e56fae76e2562b677c6f6741198a6da5d40542189f00bed3c64b0698d93</cites><orcidid>0000-0002-4129-133X</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5720184/pdf/$$EPDF$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5720184/$$EHTML$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>230,314,723,776,780,881,21945,27830,27901,27902,44921,45309,53766,53768</link.rule.ids><linktorsrc>$$Uhttps://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1479972316636990?utm_source=summon&amp;utm_medium=discovery-provider$$EView_record_in_SAGE_Publications$$FView_record_in_$$GSAGE_Publications</linktorsrc><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26965222$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Carreiro-Martins, Pedro</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gomes-Belo, Joana</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Papoila, Ana Luísa</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Caires, Iolanda</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Palmeiro, Teresa</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gaspar-Marques, João</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Leiria-Pinto, Paula</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Mendes, Ana Sofia</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Paulo-Teixeira, João</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Botelho, Maria Amália</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Neuparth, Nuno</creatorcontrib><title>Chronic respiratory diseases and quality of life in elderly nursing home residents</title><title>Chronic respiratory disease</title><addtitle>Chron Respir Dis</addtitle><description>Few studies have assessed the quality of life (QOL) related to chronic respiratory diseases in the elderly.
