Schaefer, a professor of computational and applied mathematics at Rice University. Stefano Toxiri; stefano.toxiri@iit.it; (0039) 010 2896 987; Istituto Italiano di Tecnología, via Morego 30, Genoa, Italy 16163 Developing standards for industrial exoskeletons and exosuits Exoskeletons - defined as wearable devices that augment, enable, assist and/or enhance physical activity through mechanical interaction with the body - are rapidly maturing as a technology. The authors are Brian Lowe of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; William Billotte formerly with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and now with ASTM International; and Donald Peterson of Northern Illinois University. The authors describe the coordination of several U.S. federal agencies, private sector stakeholders and the research community through a series of technical interchange meetings held between 2015 and 2017 leading to the formation of the ASTM F48 standards development committee.
