Avoiding problems in yard waste composting

Key issues in program implementation of yard waste composting facilities are addressed along with some methods for problem prevention. Collection of accurate data regarding quantity and composition can prevent a series of problems by adequately sizing the equipment to be capable of processing the material on a daily basis, selecting equipment to deal with items that are difficult to process, and providing adequate detention time and area for composting all materials. Other factors that have an impact on the quantity and composition of yard wastes that will arrive at the composting facility are: 1. method and frequency of collection, and 2. the price structure for collection. Site selection is a delicate process which requires the fine balancing of several factors, such as environmental, technical, financial, economic, social, and political. Some solutions to successful and appropriate site selection include: 1. locating the facility as far away from any inhabited structure as possible, and 2. having good access to the site that avoids residential areas.
