Voices from the field experience: cooperating teachers and their practicum students reflect on the experience of sharing and learning

description " 'Should I or shouldn't I?' is a question I asked as I pondered whether or not to have a student teacher. Nine weeks seems like an awfully long time, but the rewards are many. [Carol Anne Hagen] started her practicum with me in October. Carol brought a wealth of experience with her to the classroom. Carol has teenaged children, teaches piano, is involved in minor hockey and volunteered in her children's classes at school. As a result, she has many organizational, classroom management and time management skills. We teamed up for a very positive practicum experience. The answer to 'Should I or shouldn't I?' is, 'I'm glad I did!' " "Before I met [Pat Proudfoot], I had been on the outside looking in, essentially viewing the classroom through a stained-glass window-a window etched with broad strokes of motherly concern and preconceived notions about students, teachers and teaching. Pat and I enjoyed a relationship filled with sharing curriculum resources, exchanging ideas about classroom management and memories of our own children's adolescent angst. A strong feeling of support and understanding enhanced the daily dynamics of the classroom. Pat's down-to-earth style and genuine concern for others are qualities that I will attempt to emulate."
