description | Burgess has a vision to connect students to areas of the community with varying socio-economic status; to identify food deserts, and other low-income or inner-city areas suffering from food deprivation; to draw parallels among students to food and where it comes from; to address health care and how it is obtained through food; and to allow students the opportunity to become project managers while educating each other and members of the community. Students build their culinary skills, while also integrating global competence, as defined by The Asia Society in collaboration with the Council of Chief State School Officers, and adopted by the U.S. Department of Education: * Investigate the world. Supporting lessons included investigating the farm-to-fork movement and its global implications, exercising resourcefulness by identifying what tools were needed, acquiring and operating equipment on loan from our construction trades and automotive programs, following written and verbal instructions, and managing a project. * A commercial smoker was acquired to pull behind the bus and serve as one of the initial modes of cooking allowing for future design changes. Make Use of the Global CTE Toolkit to Address Food Security Within the Global CTE Toolkit, there are additional CTE content areas addressed via Food Security projects, including an agriculture project on "Food Security and Food Delivery Systems - Challenges Around the World;" a business project titled, "Food Security: To grow or not to grow?;" and a law enforcement/government project, "Security for Imported Food - Legal Issues" Other projects in the toolkit include the development of clean energy for business/ finance, law/government, manufacturing and building trades/architecture; women's health projects for health science, family and consumer sciences, business/advertising/marketing, and law/government; and cybersecurity projects for a cybersecurity course, business and law/government. |
