The prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting was 64, 61 and 29%, respectively. There was a significant (p &lt; 0.05) reduction in the prevalence of underweight and stunting over two time periods (1999 and 2008). Logistic regression showed that the risk of underweight was 1.7 times higher among children of illiterate mothers and those suffering from morbidities, while stunting was 1.4 times higher among children belonging to lowest and middle household's wealth indexes. Undernutrition is a public health problem and is associated with literacy of mother, household wealth index and morbidities. Therefore, improving socio-economic condition along with literacy of mothers and preventing infections through personal hygiene might help in improving the nutritional status of children.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0142-6338</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1465-3664</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1093/tropej/fmr035</identifier><identifier>PMID: 21543411</identifier><identifier>CODEN: JTRPAO</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Oxford: Oxford University Press</publisher><subject>Biological and medical sciences ; Child Nutrition Disorders - epidemiology ; Child, Preschool ; Cross-Sectional Studies ; Female ; General aspects ; Health Literacy ; Humans ; India - epidemiology ; Infant ; Male ; Malnutrition - epidemiology ; Medical sciences ; Metabolic diseases ; Nutritional Status ; Other nutritional diseases (malnutrition, nutritional and vitamin deficiencies...) ; Prevalence ; Residence Characteristics ; Socioeconomic Factors ; Thinness - epidemiology ; Wasting Syndrome - epidemiology</subject><ispartof>Journal of tropical pediatrics (1980), 2012-04, Vol.58 (2), p.125-132</ispartof><rights>2015 INIST-CNRS</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c394t-75f3d9eb2b406ded4bc5e0a382a6e35f6e08a271c117a4527e4b225b4885f323</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c394t-75f3d9eb2b406ded4bc5e0a382a6e35f6e08a271c117a4527e4b225b4885f323</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,27901,27902</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttp://pascal-francis.inist.fr/vibad/index.php?action=getRecordDetail&amp;idt=25768073$$DView record in Pascal Francis$$Hfree_for_read</backlink><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21543411$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>MESHRAM, I.
