// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The expectation to generate income through tourism has become generalized among the indigenous communities of the south of Chile. Tourism, supported by the public institutions and non-governmental organizations, has acquired a mythical narrative, whose realization will bring the solutions to the problems that abound in the impoverished communities and through which the landscape capital can become the means to integrate themselves with modernity. Such narrative, and the practices generated around them, has established an institutional and organizational 'bottom line' which, depending on the course that it may take, will determine the fate of the local population. The hegemonic view has as its counterpart a series of alternative views from the community where the travels and the encounters suggest alternative forms of hospitality that could become an alternative development project or be complementary to contemporary methods. The advantage of the subaltern narratives rests in their being inscribed in a framework of multifunctionality that can subsidize the deep social vacuum that is produced by tourism's imprint in the area being considered here.
