Adjectival -Less and -Free: A Case of Shifting Institutional Currency
The different nuances of meeting created by the additon of -less and -free to create adjectives from nouns are discussed. The suffix -free has taken on positive connotations associated with the removal of unwanted qualities, as in "sugar-free."
