description This work approaches to how it has been the behavior of the small and medium size enterprises (PYMES) in Latin America and the Caribbean. In order to do that it takes into account Messinas investigations carried out in the year 2001 in this region and the proposals made by international organizations such as the CEPAL (2005) and the OIT (2004). The episteme of the microcompany is located and it is related with the situation of the young people and the role of education. Finally it is suggested to consider a set of aspects that have been successful in the microcompanies of Latin America and the Caribbean which could help to improve their performance.
