Ornithine Carbamoyltransferase Activity in Plasma of Mice with Malaria as an Index of Liver Damage

INCREASED concentrations of glutamic oxalacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminases have been detected in the serum of mice infected with Plasmodium berghei , and they are thought to be connected with changes in the liver 1–4 . Transaminases, however, are found in tissues other than liver 5 and are present in high concentrations in erythrocytes. Thus in clinical disorders associated with haemolysis, such as malaria, enzyme from lysed erythrocytes may contribute significantly to serum concentrations 2 .
