Inhibition of Hepatic Alcohol Dehydrogenase by Bilirubin

Human bile is capable of inhibiting, in vitro , the action of human and equine liver alcohol dehydrogenase. The effect is attributable mainly to bilirubin conjugates. Sodium deoxycholate had negligible inhibitory ability. Preliminary evidence indicates that the mechanism of this inhibition of alcoho...

Zusammenfassung:Human bile is capable of inhibiting, in vitro , the action of human and equine liver alcohol dehydrogenase. The effect is attributable mainly to bilirubin conjugates. Sodium deoxycholate had negligible inhibitory ability. Preliminary evidence indicates that the mechanism of this inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase is related to the capability of bilirubin for complex formation with the zinc ion. The clinical implication of these findings is discussed.
