Journal of Experimental Psychology: General
(see PA, Vol 59:2574, 2576, 2577, and 2580). Implications of the articles for the study of the general characteristics of the orienting response (OR) are discussed, along with issues related to the growth curve of conditioned responding; scoring conventions for an OR; verbal conditioning of the GSR-CR; and the relationships between semantic conditioning, verbalization, and awareness. It is concluded that verbalization and awareness are not equivalent states of recognition of the conditioning contingency and that the OR is a more appropriate criterion of awareness than verbalization.
