description This article is a translation of the original English language version, published in the Spring 1956 issue of "The Midwest Sociologist", and reprinted from his book 'The Sociological Eye: Selected Papers" (1971). In this article Hughes discusses the description and statement of the actual, obvious and subtle nature of what one does or provides, as well as the socio-psychological view of the labor force and services or "disservices" provided. Hughes defines the terminology given herein of the "division of labor" and "social role", before delving into the subject of social role and the various kinds of work. From this standpoint Hughes illustrates some of the dimensions and specifics taken in the context of and the belief surrounding the nature and self-perception within these divisions and roles, i.e. the example of the medical world, among many other related aspects to the sociology of work and structure. Then, Hughes further expounds upon the basic capacities and levels of competencies, technological aspects, as well as the relationship to the price of labor, services, and goods, and of course, role to society itself. At the end of the article, the translator provides some aspects from Hughes' life (1897-1983), highlighting many of his works, and commenting on his school of thought, approaches, and perspectives.
