Since previous studies have demonstrated that neither interleukin-1 nor tumor necrosis factor-alpha can be detected in the serum of these sarcoma-bearing mice, and that HGF/interleukin-6 is a principal mediator of the hepatic acute phase response, we conclude that circulating HGF/interleukin-6 may contribute significantly to the host responses which accompany experimentally-introduced cancer. Furthermore, prostanoid inhibition does not appear to regulate the synthesis and release of HGF/interleukin-6 during tumor growth.
