These effects were predominantly in the later parts of the responses. They occurred regardless of whether the baseline activity in the masseter muscle was inadvertently raised or lowered during the conditioning procedures. It is concluded that attentional factors can modulate jaw reflexes in man by exerting an influence on the reflex pathway at a point prior to the motoneurones. The underlying mechanism may involve the activation of descending inhibitory pathways and/or a facilitation of mechanisms underlying excitatory responses in jaw closing muscles.
