description The distribution and fine surface structures of serotonin-immunoreactive cells in the third ventricular wall of the lamprey, Lampetra japonica, were examined by backscattered electron (BSE) imaging of immunohistochemical reactions as well as by a secondary emission image of conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BSE image of immunohistochemical specimens clearly visualized the immunostained structures as bright spots which corresponded to the bulbous terminals of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons. These terminals were grouped in the hypothalamic area on the border of the ventral thalamus caudal to the level of the postoptic commissure. Secondary emission images of conventionally prepared specimens revealed a well-developed labyrinthine structure of nerve terminals and fibers in the corresponding area. The location, surface structure and serotonin content in the nerves showed a similarity between this region of the lamprey and the paraventricular organ of other higher vertebrate classes.
