The lipid composition of bovine sebum and dermis

A comparison has been made of the lipid composition of bovine sebum with that of the surrounding dermal layers, after removal of the hairs and sebaceous glands by microdissection, to determine if the linoleic acid-rich triglyceride fraction of the sebum is synthesized by the gland. The comparative a...

Zusammenfassung:A comparison has been made of the lipid composition of bovine sebum with that of the surrounding dermal layers, after removal of the hairs and sebaceous glands by microdissection, to determine if the linoleic acid-rich triglyceride fraction of the sebum is synthesized by the gland. The comparative analyses illustrate that the sebum triglycerides differ markedly in species and fatty acid composition from those in the dermis. It is concluded that the sebum triglycerides are not simply concentrations of dermal triglycerides but are synthesized within the gland.
