A steady increase was observed until November 1989, when the maximum level, with a mean of S-Se 1.6 umol/L was reached. After that, a slight decrease has occurred. The mean serum selenium level in autumn 1991 in a new group of 35 students was 1.58 umol/L. This decrease can be explained by the high amount of imported cereals in 1988 and 1989, which was reflected also in the serum selenium levels. The glutathione peroxidase activity in erythrocytes in 1989-1990 was at the same level as in 1985 and 1986. |
