Zusammenfassung:	The work described in this paper takes a general view of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) and examines their major features. The concept of an FMS for component manufacture, consisting of a forging and machining cell, is proposed and its strengths and weaknesses are examined. Both hardware and computer communication requirements are dealt with. Examples of the use of engineering software developed by the authors for axicircular parts are given.
