Zusammenfassung: | The scientific and engineering communities need to band together to obtain more federal funds for basic scientific, medical and engineering research. Federal R&D spending has steadily declined since 1965 when it was about 2.2% of GDP to only about 0.8% in 1997, and is projected to still decrease. The National Research Investment Act of 1998 was introduced in the Senate to increase by twofold federal investment in research. However, this important legislation needs the support of the research community if it is to succeed in propelling the US to leadership in science and technology in the 21st century. |
