Discovery and physical properties of Dactyl, a satellite of asteroid 243 Ida

The physical properties of the Dactyl satellite are described, with an emphasis on its notably smooth shape, its crater population and its photometric properties. Dactyl, a satellite of asteroid 243 Ida, is found to resemble both Ida and the other members of the Koronis asteroid family.
