Color by Number: Imaging Large Data

There are two standard image formats in common use in software, Indexed and Truecolor. The Truecolor, or RGB, format requires three numbers to define each pixel, corresponding to the amount of red, green and blue that must be blended to achieve a specific color and brightness.
