Relationships between red blood cell indices and the effects of thyroxine in three species of amphibians

1. 1. Red blood cell indices and the effects of thyroxine on the indices were measured from Rana pipiens, Rana catesbeiana and Bufo marinus. 2. 2. While thyroxine had no significant effect on R. catesbeiana and B. marinus red cell indices it showed significant effect on R. pipiens red cell indices....

Zusammenfassung:1. 1. Red blood cell indices and the effects of thyroxine on the indices were measured from Rana pipiens, Rana catesbeiana and Bufo marinus. 2. 2. While thyroxine had no significant effect on R. catesbeiana and B. marinus red cell indices it showed significant effect on R. pipiens red cell indices. 3. 3. Control RBC count showed inverse relationship to control mean corpuscular volume ( r = 0.807), control mean corpuscular hemoglobin ( r = 0.976) and control RBC size ( r = 0.879). 4. 4. The RBCs of R. catesbeiana were found to be the largest but had the lowest hemoglobin concentration as expressed by the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration.
