description The localization of several frog virus 3 structural polypeptides has been established by stripping the different layers of the virion with controlled degradations using Brij, NP 40, and Pronase. The degradation products were further separated on sucrose gradients and characterized by electron microscopy and SDS-gel electrophoresis. This study allowed us to determine the radial distribution of the following viral polypeptides (VPs): VP 58 in the viral envelope, VP 48 in the capsid subunits, and VPs 44 and 63, beneath the icosahedral lattice, probably associated with the lipids. Additional information is also provided on FV 3 ultrastructure from the study of the morphology of different types of well-characterized subviral particles.
