Central effects of ghrelin on the adrenal cortex: a morphological and hormonal study
Ghrelin, a growth hormone secretagogue that exerts an important role in appetite and weight regulation, participates in the activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Male Wistar rats (5/group) received daily for 5 days, via an ICV (intracerebroventricular) cannula, 5 microl phospha...

Ghrelin treatment resulted in increased (p<0.05) body weight (13%), absolute whole adrenal gland weight (18%) and whole adrenal gland volume (20%). The absolute volumes of the entire adrenal cortex, ZG, ZF, and ZR also increased (p<0.05) after ghrelin by 20%, 21%, 21% and 11%, respectively. Ghrelin-treated rats had elevated (p<0.05) blood concentrations of ACTH, aldosterone and corticosterone (68%, 32% and 67%, respectively). The data clearly provide both morphological and hormonal status that ghrelin acts centrally to exert a global stimulatory effect on the adrenal cortex. Clarifying of the ghrelin precise role in the multiple networks affecting the stress hormone release, besides its well known energy and metabolic unbalance effects, remains a very important research goal.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0231-5882</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.4149/gpb_2010_02_194</identifier><identifier>PMID: 20577031</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Slovakia</publisher><subject>Adrenal Cortex - anatomy & histology ; Adrenal Cortex - drug effects ; Adrenal Cortex - secretion ; Adrenal Cortex Hormones - blood ; Adrenal Cortex Hormones - secretion ; Adrenocorticotropic Hormone - blood ; Adrenocorticotropic Hormone - secretion ; Aldosterone - blood ; Aldosterone - secretion ; Animals ; Body Weight - drug effects ; Corticosterone - blood ; Corticosterone - secretion ; Eating - drug effects ; Ghrelin - administration & dosage ; Injections, Intraventricular ; Male ; Organ Size - drug effects ; Rats ; Rats, Wistar ; Zona Fasciculata - anatomy & histology ; Zona Fasciculata - drug effects ; Zona Glomerulosa - anatomy & histology ; Zona Glomerulosa - drug effects ; Zona Reticularis - anatomy & histology ; Zona Reticularis - drug effects</subject><ispartof>General physiology and biophysics, 2010-06, Vol.29 (2), p.194-202</ispartof><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c403t-402eccf4d4ad61b6c542778f27f5d1ed43c96235c98ac8fc3be2279daf61717a3</citedby></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,27901,27902</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20577031$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Milosević, Verica Lj</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Stevanović, Darko M</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Nesić, Dejan M</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Sosić-Jurjević, Branka T</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Ajdzanović, Vladimir Z</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Starcević, Vesna P</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Severs, Walter B</creatorcontrib><title>Central effects of ghrelin on the adrenal cortex: a morphological and hormonal study</title><title>General physiology and biophysics</title><addtitle>Gen Physiol Biophys</addtitle><description>Ghrelin, a growth hormone secretagogue that exerts an important role in appetite and weight regulation, participates in the activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
