Lean body mass depletion is associated with an increased length of hospital stay

The study done by Pichard et al shows a clear association between fat-free mass, as assessed by bio electric impedance analysis (BIA), and the length of hospital stay (LOS). Fat-free mass correlates with skeletal muscle mass, and improvement of muscle mass by nutritional intervention together with physical training may improve the clinical course of disease.
