Lycopus europaeus (Gypsywort): Effects on the thyroidal parameters and symptoms associated with thyroid function

The aim of the prospective two-armed open study was to examine the effect of Lycopi europaei herba on thyroid function and on associated symptoms during a 3-month follow-up phase. The study population consisted of patients with a basal TSH

The study population consisted of patients with a basal TSH&lt;1.0 mU/l and hyperthyroidism-associated symptoms. For the first time, the T 3/T 4 excretion in 24 h urine was measured as a primary objective parameter. As secondary parameters, further hormones, the general condition and the symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism were registered. The urinary T 4 excretion was significantly increased in Lycopus europaeus-treated patients ( p=0.032). It is supposed that renal mechanisms cause the increased T 4 excretion either by a modification within the glomeruli or by impaired reabsorption. Symptoms being specific to the thyroid gland were diminished, as e.g. the increased heart rate in the morning. The Lycopus europaeus preparation showed a good tolerance. These findings confirm positive effects of Lycopus europaeus in slight forms of hyperthyroidism.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0944-7113</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1618-095X</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1016/j.phymed.2007.11.001</identifier><identifier>PMID: 18083505</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Germany: Elsevier GmbH</publisher><subject>Body Mass Index ; Body Weight - drug effects ; Care and treatment ; Drug Administration Schedule ; Female ; Follow-Up Studies ; Heart Rate - drug effects ; Humans ; Hyperthyroidism ; Hyperthyroidism - blood ; Hyperthyroidism - drug therapy ; Hyperthyroidism - urine ; Lycopus - chemistry ; Lycopus europaeus (Gypsywort) ; Male ; Middle Aged ; Patient Compliance ; Phytotherapy ; Plant Preparations - adverse effects ; Plant Preparations - therapeutic use ; Prospective Studies ; Thyroid diseases ; Thyroid function ; Thyroid Function Tests ; Thyrotropin - blood ; Thyroxine - blood ; Thyroxine - urine ; Triiodothyronine - blood ; Triiodothyronine - urine ; Urinary T 3/T 4 excretion</subject><ispartof>Phytomedicine (Stuttgart), 2008-01, Vol.15 (1), p.16-22</ispartof><rights>2007 Elsevier GmbH</rights><rights>COPYRIGHT 2008 Urban &amp; Fischer Verlag</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c465t-2c2d56b4a5022368a2a9a02465519d09244aaa182d63c3d86fdadec0e32283053</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c465t-2c2d56b4a5022368a2a9a02465519d09244aaa182d63c3d86fdadec0e32283053</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.phymed.2007.11.001$$EHTML$$P50$$Gelsevier$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,777,781,3537,27905,27906,45976</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18083505$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Beer, A.-M.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wiebelitz, K.R.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Schmidt-Gayk, H.</creatorcontrib><title>Lycopus europaeus (Gypsywort): Effects on the thyroidal parameters and symptoms associated with thyroid function</title><title>Phytomedicine (Stuttgart)</title><addtitle>Phytomedicine</addtitle><description>The aim of the prospective two-armed open study was to examine the effect of Lycopi europaei herba on thyroid function and on associated symptoms during a 3-month follow-up phase.
