A positive pertussis-PCR was found in 14/90 (16%) infants infected with RSV and in 5/30 negative for RSV. Similar clinical symptoms were found in all RSV-positive infants with or without pertussis co-infection. Most infants (73%) were not vaccinated against pertussis, and the other children had received one or two injections. In conclusion, pertussis-RSV co-infection is common in young infants, and pertussis-PCR should be used, whenever available.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0340-6199</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1432-1076</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1007/s00431-007-0633-6</identifier><identifier>PMID: 18034357</identifier><identifier>CODEN: EJPEDT</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Berlin/Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag</publisher><subject>Bacterial diseases ; Bacterial infections ; Biological and medical sciences ; Bronchopneumonia ; Ent and stomatologic bacterial diseases ; Female ; General aspects ; Hospitals, Pediatric ; Human bacterial diseases ; Human viral diseases ; Humans ; Immunization ; Infant ; Infants ; Infections ; Infectious diseases ; Male ; Medical sciences ; Medicine ; Medicine &amp; Public Health ; Original Article ; Paris - epidemiology ; Pediatrics ; Pertussis ; Pertussis Vaccine - administration &amp; dosage ; Polymerase chain reaction ; Prevalence ; Prospective Studies ; Respiratory diseases ; Respiratory syncytial virus ; Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections - complications ; Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections - epidemiology ; Respiratory Syncytial Viruses - isolation &amp; purification ; Respiratory tract diseases ; Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction ; Vaccines ; Viral diseases ; Viral diseases of the respiratory system and ent viral diseases ; Viruses ; Whooping cough ; Whooping Cough - complications ; Whooping Cough - epidemiology ; Whooping Cough - prevention &amp; control</subject><ispartof>European journal of pediatrics, 2008-09, Vol.167 (9), p.1017-1019</ispartof><rights>Springer-Verlag 2002</rights><rights>2008 INIST-CNRS</rights><rights>Springer-Verlag 2008</rights><rights>Springer-Verlag 2002.</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c458t-1481e73daa8821948136caa187c7b868135777bf11d4b3c0a24f28c06a5c75b23</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c458t-1481e73daa8821948136caa187c7b868135777bf11d4b3c0a24f28c06a5c75b23</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00431-007-0633-6$$EPDF$$P50$$Gspringer$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/s00431-007-0633-6$$EHTML$$P50$$Gspringer$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,780,784,27924,27925,41488,42557,51319</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttp://pascal-francis.inist.fr/vibad/index.php?action=getRecordDetail&amp;idt=20569158$$DView record in Pascal Francis$$Hfree_for_read</backlink><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18034357$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Cosnes-Lambe, Cécile</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Raymond, Josette</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chalumeau, Martin</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Pons-Catalano, Charlotte</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Moulin, Florence</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Suremain, Nathalie de</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Reglier-Poupet, Hélène</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lebon, Pierre</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Poyart, Claire</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gendrel, Dominique</creatorcontrib><title>Pertussis and respiratory syncytial virus infections</title><title>European journal of pediatrics</title><addtitle>Eur J Pediatr</addtitle><addtitle>Eur J Pediatr</addtitle><description>During the winter 2005–2006, all infants &lt;4 months of age admitted for bronchiolitis or acute respiratory tract infection in a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Paris were tested for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pertussis with real-time polymerase-chain reaction (RT-PCR).
