Methods:  A total of 1473 patients with gastric cancer, who had undergone curative gastrectomy were reviewed to investigate the prognostic significance of age. Results:  Blood vessel invasion and differentiated type were more frequently observed in elderly than nonelderly patients (P &lt; 0.0001) and elderly patients underwent limited lymph node dissection compared with nonelderly patients (P &lt; 0.001). Moreover, chemotherapy was carried out in nonelderly patients more frequently than in elderly patients (P &lt; 0.005). Ten‐year survival rates were 70.2 and 81.4% in elderly and nonelderly patients, respectively, and the differences were statistically significant (P &lt; 0.001). Postoperative mortality rates were 3.2 and 2.0% in elderly and nonelderly patients, respectively. Hematogenous recurrence was more frequently observed in elderly patients than nonelderly patients (P &lt; 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that age was an independent prognostic factor. Conclusions:  Age clinically serves as a simple predictor of survival in patients with gastric cancer and should be taken into account along with conventional clinicopathological variables such as depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1445-1433</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1445-2197</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/j.1445-2197.2006.03756.x</identifier><identifier>PMID: 16768768</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Melbourne, Australia: Blackwell Publishing Asia</publisher><subject>Adenocarcinoma - mortality ; Adenocarcinoma - pathology ; Adenocarcinoma - surgery ; Adolescent ; Adult ; age ; Age Factors ; Aged ; Aged, 80 and over ; Female ; Gastrectomy ; gastric cancer ; hematogenous recurrence ; Humans ; Male ; Middle Aged ; Neoplasm Invasiveness ; prognosis ; Retrospective Studies ; Stomach Neoplasms - mortality ; Stomach Neoplasms - pathology ; Stomach Neoplasms - surgery ; Survival Rate ; Treatment Outcome</subject><ispartof>ANZ journal of surgery, 2006-06, Vol.76 (6), p.458-461</ispartof><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4056-2f39377f44c1f02288f09d5cdd7dac60e73450fb4576665fe596f54407d1b96d3</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4056-2f39377f44c1f02288f09d5cdd7dac60e73450fb4576665fe596f54407d1b96d3</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2Fj.1445-2197.2006.03756.x$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2Fj.1445-2197.2006.03756.x$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,1411,27901,27902,45550,45551</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16768768$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Saito, Hiroaki</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Osaki, Tomohiro</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Murakami, Daiki</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Sakamoto, Teruhisa</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kanaji, Shingo</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Tatebe, Shigeru</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Tsujitani, Shunichi</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Ikeguchi, Masahide</creatorcontrib><title>EFFECT OF AGE ON PROGNOSIS IN PATIENTS WITH GASTRIC CANCER</title><title>ANZ journal of surgery</title><addtitle>ANZ J Surg</addtitle><description>Background:  The incidence of gastric cancer among the elderly has recently been increasing; however, the prognostic value of age in patients with gastric cancer remains elusive.
