Zusammenfassung: | A collection of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)‐reactive serum specimens from the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia was investigated for the genotype, predicted serotype and the presence of diagnostically significant mutations in the surface protein. From a set of 794 samples, 15 were identified serologically to harbour possible HBsAg mutants and were investigated further. An additional 20 samples were included into the study for PCR and sequence analysis. Of the 22 samples which were HBV‐DNA‐positive, 16 were of genotype C with the remaining six being genotype B. Point mutations resulting in amino acid substitutions were noted in 10 samples. The majority of these mutations occurred outside the a determinant. |
