Rural Assistance, Mobilisations and Strikes: Sexual Division in Labour Warfare between "Babaçu" Coconut Workers in Brazil

This article deals with a movement of families working in agriculture in the state of Maranhao, in the north east of Brazil, led mainly by women. Their work consists in extracting "babacu" coconuts, processing them & selling the resulting products. The article focuses on the struggle for agricultural reform & for free access to forestry resources, & on the strategies adopted concerning gender relations at times when conflicts become most serious.
