description | This study examined the effects of culture (Japan and the United States) and task setting (working individually or working in the presence of a group) on job productivity and job quality. Subjects were asked to maximize both their quantity and quality of performance in a laboratory task. Results showed that Japanese subjects had higher productivity than American subjects, but did not have higher quality of work. In addition, both Japanese and American subjects had higher productivity and job quality in the presence of a group than working alone. Against expectations, group presence did not interact with cultural samples.
