description To investigate the patterns of usage of the Catalan language in northeastern Spain in terms of cultural integration & political socialization within the context of the normalization of minority languages in post-Franco Spain, an analysis is presented of data from Consorci d'Informacio i Documentacio ([Consortia of Information and Documentation] Padrones Municipales, 1986). Of the four provinces comprising Catalonia, Lerida has the highest % of people fluent in Catalan, followed by Gerona, Tarragona, & Barcelona. The % of those who understand Catalan is much higher than that for those who speak, read, or write it. Implications for future regional self-government with greater autonomy are discussed. 14 Tables, 1 Appendix. M. Meeks
