description Epidemiologic data, showing rates of increase of incidence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), are presented for the US, Brazil, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, & Honduras. Analysis points to ominous trends in the spread of AIDS. The human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) epidemic is now being followed by introduction of HIV-2 in Europe & North America; longitudinal studies are urgently needed. Controls for other retroviruses (eg, the human T-cell lymphotropic virus), which include education, reduction of risky behaviors, & screening of the blood supply, are also urgently needed, but difficult to implement. Cuba's controversial response to control of AIDs is briefly described. Also discussed are the future extent & magnitude of the dissemination of HIV in various countries, along with responses to these challenges. 1 Figure, 15 References. C. Grindle
