Introduction: Robert G. Colodny: The Struggle against Fascism at Home and Abroad

An introduction to a special issue on, "The Spanish Civil War," notes its dedication to former editor Robert G. Colodny (1915-1997), an ardent anti-fascist who fought & was severely wounded in that war. Colodny joined the US Army in WWII only to be sent to a military detention camp for American volunteers who had served with the Republican forces in Spain. After gaining release, he was sent to the Aleutian Islands, where he developed what has been called "a one-man university of the air" on Armed Forces Radio. He returned to school after the war & chose the Spanish conflict as the subject of his PhD thesis. A book based upon the thesis, The Struggle for Madrid: The Central Epic of the Spanish Conflict, was published in 1958 & followed by, Spain: The Glory & the Tragedy (1970). Colodny spent his entire 30-year academic career at the U of Pittsburgh where he remained dedicated to his political & social principles.
