The European Dimension of the French Arm

France has declared the construction of European Defence a priority of its foreign policy. It plays a major role in the development of European Security and Defence Policy. Therefore the transformation of the French army is taking place increasingly within a European framework at the operational as well as the institutional level, and the French armies participate to the common forces and structures. Yet this European framework has become more blurred recently, as the European Defence Policy seems to be at a stalemate or even to limit its ambitions. The relaunching of European Defence, that could be supported by the Treaty of Lisbon, requires that France should clarify its choices regarding military cooperation. Adapted from the source document.
