In challenging the caricature of keiretsu relationships as closed and static trading systems, much of the scholarly discussion concerning Japanese economic organization has moved too far in the opposite direction, leading to an underappreciation both of the overall significance of keiretsu and of their continuing viability in the contemporary Japanese economy.
