// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The issue of proof was at the heart of the problems involved in defining nobility under the Ancien Régime. Between a way of life, reputation and legal status, the nobility proved itself increasingly through genealogy. This article analyses how changes in the regulation of such proofs by French monarchical and ecclesiastical institutions reflected the development of the sometimes contradictory expectations of the nobles and royal authority in the courts of the 17th and 18th centuries.
