description | •This article emphasizes that addressing spine surgeon longevity is not merely an individual responsibility. Institutional changes, workflow optimization, and a supportive work culture are essential.•Ergonomic imperative: Proactive ergonomic interventions are crucial for spine surgeon longevity.•Technological support: Continued development and refinement of technologies like exoscope, advanced instrumentation, and robotics offer the potential to reduce physical strain and radiation exposure.•Mental health focus: Accessible mental health resources, mentorship programs, and resilience-building strategies are essential in fighting burnout. A cultural shift that destigmatizes seeking support and prioritizes open communication within surgical teams is essential.•Global collaboration: Workplace culture and schools can play a role in focus solutions.
Spine surgery is a physically and mentally demanding surgical specialty. This paper focuses on raising awareness about ergonomic challenges that threaten spine surgeon longevity. Sustaining a fulfilling career in spine surgery requires a multifaceted approach that prioritizes physical well-being and mental health. By proactively addressing them through education, technology, and support systems, we can foster a future where spine surgeons enjoy long, healthy careers and continue to provide top-quality care. |
