Trace-metal and organochlorine residues in sediments of the Upper Rockaway River, New Jersey

Tabulated data are presented on the concentrations of chlorinated organic compounds and of trace metals, total iron, and total aluminium in sediment from 7 locations in the upper Rockaway river, N.J. A map of the river basin showing sampling sites is included. Significant residues of polychlorinated biphenyls, chlorinated insecticides, and trace metals were found at the 5 lower sites, but at the 2 upstream stations the sediments were relatively free from contamination. These results corresponded to land uses, since the 2 upstream stations drained mainly forested land, while the lower stations were in the vicinity of a number of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
