For the longest transmission path, excellent transmission performance is achieved using cost-effective directly modulated signals. Network reconfigurability is achieved using add-drop modules that are commercially available as of this writing. We show that the dynamic nature of the network does not affect the system performance. In particular, we show that electronic gain control of erbium-doped amplifiers is capable of managing switching transients in amplified metro-scale networks.
