In this review, we will highlight the role of platelets as key players in the inflammatory and innate immune response against bacterial and viral infection, including direct and indirect interactions with pathogens and other immune cells. •Platelets function as immune cells, directly linking coagulation and immunity.•Platelets respond to pathogens by direct recognition or in response to inflammatory stimuli from other immune cells.•Platelets represent a key regulator between protective hemostasis and pathogenic immunothrombosis.
