description In this paper, an experimental research program on the use of rectangular steel jackets for seismic retrofit of damaged reinforced concrete frame columns is presented. Six large-scale columns were tested to examine the effectiveness of various types of steel jackets for improving the seismic resistance of damaged concrete columns in which splice failure occurred in the longitudinal reinforcement. Response of the columns before and after being repaired with steel jackets was examined. Several types of steel jackets were investigated, including rectangular steel jackets with and without adhesive anchor bolts, and with unbonded through rods. In addition, one column was repaired by welding the lap splice. Test results indicate that a thin rectangular steel jacket combined with unbonded through rods can be a highly effective seismic retrofit measure for damaged reinforced concrete columns with lap splice failures.
